Controversy and cancellation[]
At the Nickelodeon upfront meeting with advertisers on March 13, 2014, Nickelodeon programming president Russell Hicks stated that Sam & Cat has been renewed for a second season[11] and producer Dan Schneider told Adweek that it was for 20 episodes.[12] However, as of, other Nickelodeon sources stated that an official decision has yet to be made if the show will be renewed.[13]
In March 2014, McCurdy was the victim of an invasion of privacy when selfies of her in her underwear she had sent her ex-boyfriend while they were dating surfaced online. Around that time, she withdrew from the Kids Choice Awards where Sam & Cat won the "Favorite Show" award along with Grande winning "Favorite Actress". McCurdy later stated that her withdrawal from the ceremony was due to alleged "unfair treatment" by Nickelodeon. In the following month, it was reported that behind-the-scenes issues had derailed the network's plan for a second season. Additionally, it was reported that both actresses were ready to move on from the network. It was confirmed that McCurdy and Grande were getting along fine, other outlets began reporting that Nickelodeon had paid Grande more than McCurdy, which was denied by Grande.
After airing 33 episodes, Nickelodeon released a promo in July stating two episodes remained to air.[14] Nickelodeon later announced that they will no longer be producing any more episodes. Media teams attributed the cancellation due to a multitude of issues; an alleged salary dispute between McCurdy and Nickelodeon, rumored feuds between Grande and McCurdy, the leak of provocative photos of McCurdy, Grande's growing music career, as well as their desires to pursue other projects. The final episode aired on July 17, 2014, as a lead-in to the inaugural 2014 Kids' Choice Sports ceremony.
